Newton Tracey v Holsworthy (League Cup final) 9th Sept

With many players sporting hangovers from the previous days celebrations, Newton were pleased to be batting first. Indeed 9 of the side could have turned up 2 hours late without being needed as the prolific league cup partnership of Screech and Gear continued only to be broken when Gear was caught playing a nervous shot on 99.

To be continued.....

 MATCH REPORT TO FOLLOW

North Devon 3rds v Newton Tracey 2nds 16 September

In a match that Newton needed to obtain a minimum of 8 points from to get promotion, Colin did the sensible thing and insert the home team on an Instow pitch suited to batsmen. Regular 1st XI batsman Dan Pickard took toll of Newton's bowlers shorn of 3 regular bowlers, Jo Burford, Bill and Mark, bolstered by Gary Chatham and Worm, bowled well but Dan hit a magnificent 170, innings only ended by Gary, having bowled his heart out on a very flat pitch trying to bowl quickly, defeating him with an off break! The next highest batsman hit 37, but the bowlers generally toiled, Gary taking 3 for 63 in 7 overs, Jon Whormsley 2-44 in 9 and Andy Chatham getting one with his loopy leg breaks,. North Devon had a young side; apart from Colin Payne, playing a lot of colts, including the Clarke twins who live in Lovacott next door to Brian Tilbury. North Devon ending up on 286 for 7 in their 45 overs.

Newton needed to score therefore at over 6 per over though the wicket was still firm and true despite a few light showers during the innings and rapidly depleting light. Graham Moore and Jon Whormsley opened; Whormsley having hit 66 in the run riot the day before, and calmly put on 180 for the first wicket at about a run a ball, before Colin Payne got one through Whormsley who was hitting out having pulled his hamstring. Graham continued on to his century and ploughed on with first Paul Bitmead, and then Andy Chatham towards victory. Graham eventually tiredly had his leg stump knocked out the ground for his 2nd best ever score of 135 with 5, yes 5 sixes, and departed with about 10 needed. Gary Chatham came out to ensure that his Saturday team-mates did not celebrate victory as he hit the winning runs as the sun was setting on the horizon off the 3rd ball of the final over, to ensure Newton's promotion next year to Division 4, in 2nd place
